More about the WSOP
The original World Series of Poker dealt its first hand in 1969. The dealer behind the show was Tom Moore from San Antonio, Texas, and the place was an invitational event at Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno. This inaugural event was won by legendary pokerplayer Crandell Addington who later managed to place himself in the top ten of the World Series of Poker Main Event eight times - a record that still stands! But it was a man by the name of Benny Binion and his two sons Jack and Ted who would turn the World Series of poker into the prestigious tournament that the event is today.
Over the coming decades, The WSOP was hosted by the legendary hotel and casino Binion's Horseshoe, named after its founder. As the tournament grew in popularity, high stakes Poker moved out from the tucked away backrooms into the grand Casino halls of Las Vegas.
In 2004, the Horseshoe was purchased by Harrah's Entertainment who later announced that the upcoming WSOP tournaments would be held at the Rio Hotel & Casino. And since 2005, the Rio has been home to greatest showdowns in world poker.
The 2008 World Series of Poker will offer players more space, with up to 300 tables available for tournament and live-game play. The additional tables will enable tournament officials to reduce the start days for the WSOP Main Event to three. As in 2006 and 2007, World Series of Poker officials will allow players entering the WSOP Main Event to choose their start dates as long as seats are available on the selected dates.
