The Hand
A poker hand consists of five cards. In games where a player has more than five cards and selects five to form a poker hand, the remaining cards do not play any part in the ranking. Poker ranks are always based on five cards only.
The strength of a hand is judged based on the cards and the valid combination that they create. Validity of combinations are defined in the categories of the hand ranking.
The Ranking
High Card
Nobody at the table holds a qualifying pair so the player with the highest card wins. In the event two people hold the same winning card, the kicker (second highest) card will then decide and so on.

High Pair
Two cards of the same rank. If two players have the same pair, the highest kicker card wins.

Two Pair
Two different sets of two cards both being of the same rank. If two players have two pairs, the hand with the highest pair wins. If they have the same high pair, whoever has the highest pair wins. If both players have the same two pairs, the person with the highest kicker card wins.

Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same rank.

Straight
Five cards in any sequence. Cards may be of any suit.

Flush
Five cards of the same suit. If there is more than one flush, the hand with the highest card wins. If both players have the same high card, the player with the highest second card wins.

Full House
Three cards of one rank and two of another rank of any suit. If more than one player has a full house, the full house with the highest ranking three cards wins.

Four of a Kind
Four cards of the same rank of any suit.

Straight Flush
A straight with all five cards being suited.

Royal Flush
Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit.
